Patient 1
Even well-proportioned teeth may look overly large or small if the look of your lips or gums disrupts the balance of your smile as a whole. This patient decided to meet with Los Angeles implant dentist Dr. Alex Farnoosh to find out about ways to minimize the "gummy" look of her smile and help her present a more attractive, balanced appearance. Frequently, patients see that their smile shows too much gum, and they think they need to minimize the size of the gums to display more of the tooth. However, more often the "gummy" smile is an illusion. In most cases the patient has normal-sized teeth and healthy, appropriately-sized gums, but the upper lip simply elevates too far above the gum line when the patient smiles. Dr. Farnoosh can effectively address this problem without requiring surgery to the teeth or the gums at all. Simply by creating a small incision and lowering the bottom edge of the lip, he allows the lip to rest just above the teeth when the patient smiles. This patient was very happy with her results from Dr. Farnoosh's gummy smile treatment. After her procedure her teeth display a normal, attractive shape and her gums are mostly hidden behind her lips. The overall shape of her smile also presents a more natural-looking upward curve. In her follow-up consultation the patient also met with Dr. Farnoosh to plan a gum-leveling procedure and discuss her options for porcelain veneers (not shown).
Patient 2
Some patients assume that just because their smile shows a large amount of gum, they need to find a surgeon to remove the "extra" gum tissue and expose more of the tooth surface. In fact, Dr. Farnoosh finds that that in most circumstances gum reduction is not necessary and actually exposes patients to an extra risk of periodontal disease. Most patients, like this young woman, find that Dr. Farnoosh can correct their "gummy smile" simply and effectively by repositioning the lower line of their lip. In this procedure Dr. Farnoosh will not actually change the length of the patient's lip. Like this patient, many patients who have a "gummy" smile actually have appropriately sized, full lips; the problem is that when they smile, the lip tissue curls under, elevating the lip too much. Through a small incision behind the bottom edge of the lip, Dr. Farnoosh can adjust how much lip tissue is still showing when you smile. After this type of procedure, your lips should appear the same when your face is at rest; the only difference is that when you smile, your lip retains its position just above the top edge of your teeth. After her procedure by Beverly Hills periodontist Dr. Alex Farnoosh, this patient's smile is much more attractive. Her gums are now hidden behind the lips, allowing a more balanced smile that harmonizes very well with the rest of her face. Before her procedure, this patient also displayed some uneven gum pigmentation, but Dr. Farnoosh found that a bleaching procedure would not be necessary because the pigmentation was very mild and would be hidden by the patient's lowered lip.
Patient 3
Even if your gums are healthy, if they are discolored or blotchy they may negatively implant the positive impression you create when you smile. This patient scheduled a time to meet with Los Angeles periodontist and aesthetic dentist Dr. Alex Farnoosh because he felt that the uneven pigmentation of his gums gave him a less attractive look and negatively offset the appearance of his teeth. In many cases, gum discoloration can actually indicate deeper problems such as gingivitis or periodontitis. In his aesthetic dentistry consultations, Dr. Farnoosh takes the time to verify that your gums are healthy and that your gum discoloration is due to factors like ethnicity or medication, rather than more serious problems that may require immediate attention. Dr. Farnoosh found that this patient's gums were healthy, although the discoloration did imbalance the look of the patient's teeth and gums when he smiled. Based on this patient's healthy gum condition and noted discoloration, Dr. Farnoosh recommended a gum bleaching treatment at his Beverly Hills office. After his Los Angeles dark gums treatment, this patient is enjoying obvious improvement in the color and tone of his gums. Typical of this procedure, the patient was able to complete the treatment within one office visit and leave with a clearly transformed smile. While some patients experience some gum sensitivity immediately after their procedure, in general they are able to continue normally with that day's meals. Because this treatment is noninvasive and virtually immediate, it requires no downtime or recovery time.

Patient 6
Structural tooth problems often accompany deeper problems that need to be corrected by a periodontist or a Los Angeles implant dentist. This patient decided to meet with Dr. Farnoosh to get a thorough evaluation and receive recommendations for how to go about improving the shape of her teeth and the health of her dental structures and tissues overall. In the first image, you can see that the patient had a cracked upper front tooth that was infected and had to be removed. Two lower front teeth are also missing. At the time, the patient was undergoing a program of orthodontic treatment with braces to correct her bite and create adequate space for her to receive 2 dental implants in the lower front. The infection was a more imperative problem, however. In Image 2 you see in the initial X-ray of the patient's teeth that the infection was also creating bone loss around the problem tooth. After Dr. Farnoosh removed the tooth, he temporarily re-attached the tooth's crown to her orthodontic braces to fill the new space between her teeth and preserve the contour and fullness of her gum tissue. At the same time, he replaced the tooth's root with an implant. After the implant fused to the bone, Dr. Farnoosh replaced the patient's temporary crown with a permanent one that creates the look, feel, and function of her natural tooth. Once the braces had created adequate space between her lower teeth, he placed dental implants in those spaces as well. In the second image we see the patient's final result (implants are identified by arrows). Clearly, this patient displays a much more attractive smile, but also, because she is no longer exposed to the bone deterioration and infection from her cracked tooth, her teeth are much healthier and function much better. Her Beverly Hills dental implants match the rest of her smile perfectly, and she is very pleased with her results.

Patient 8
Uncomfortable about how obvious her gums looked when she smiled, this patient decided to find out more about how she could improve her smile to emphasize her teeth rather than her gums. After considering her options for a cosmetic dentist in Los Angeles she made an appointment with Dr. Farnoosh. Dr. Farnoosh performed a thorough evaluation of her mouth and gums, and explained that dental surgery would be unnecessary to correct her "gummy smile." In most cases, patients who experience this problem generally have a normal amount of gum tissue and normally sized teeth; the problem occurs when their lip line elevates too far and curls under, revealing too much of their upper gum. Dr. Farnoosh explained that a small adjustment to the upper lip could enhance her smile without altering the way her lips look while her mouth is at rest. During the procedure Dr. Farnoosh used a relatively simple incision at the back of the upper lip to allow it to remain lower and straighter, hiding the patient's gums when she smiles. As the "after" photo shows, lowering her lip completely transformed her smile. Now, her lips look fuller and hide her gums much more effectively when she smiles, giving her a more balanced and attractive smile and preventing her from feeling self-conscious about her former gummy smile.
