Hyperplasia (overgrowth of gums)
This kidney transplant patient presented with a severe case of drug-related hyperplasia due to cyclosporine and a calcium channel blocker. He was also experiencing excessive oral bleeding. The laser was selected for his treatment because it cauterizes blood vessels and minimizes bleeding. At his post-operative appointment, this patient was so grateful and excited by the change that he was moved to tears. His gums are now normal and healthy, and he can again smile with confidence.
Orthodontic-Induced Hyperplasia (overgrowth of gums)
Sometimes orthodontic appliances can interfere with proper oral hygiene. The resulting accumulation of bacteria often causes a stimulation of gum growth resulting in orthodontic-induced hyperplasia. Left untreated, the overgrowth of gum tissue can become very extensive and can cover much of the tooth surface and create “false” periodontal pockets in which bacteria can thrive. The teeth can appear short and stubby with an irregular gum line. The smile is unattractive and reveals an overwhelming amount of gum tissue. Cosmetic crown lengthening can recontour gum and bone tissue to balance the visible tooth structure and the gums. If needed, this procedure is usually performed shortly before the orthodontic treatment is completed.
Cosmetic Crown Lengthening
This patient was concerned about her irregular gum line, especially on her upper right front tooth. She was embarrassed to smile. Cosmetic crown lengthening was performed and the patient then returned to her general dentist to complete her restorations. She is very pleased with the results.
Cosmetic Crown Lengthening
This patient was concerned about the excess gum tissue revealed when she smiled. She had a “gummy” smile. After a cosmetic crown lengthening procedure, this patient was thrilled with her new smile.
Lip Repositioning
This patient traveled to Michigan for a lip repositioning procedure to correct her “gummy” smile. She was very pleased with the result and was no longer self conscious about her smile.
