Neuromuscular Orthodontics
Neuromuscular Orthodontics is a branch of Orthodontics dealing with aligning, balancing and harmonizing the Muscles of the Head and Neck, Central Nervous System, Temporomandibular Joint, and the teeth. The goal of Neuromuscular Orthodontics is to evaluate the TMJ, and position the jaw first in its proper relaxed position (physiologic rest). In another words, having the final destination in mind first before placing braces on. This method avoids any surprised at the end such as need for surgery. Neuromuscular Orthodontics is a nonsurgical procedure and avoids future TMJ problems as well. Posture, breathing and airways, habits and reasons why teeth and facial features are the way they are, are evaluated and the source of the problem is resolved first. Nonsurgical profile enhancement, for those who have small chins or for those whose chins are too close to their nose, or those whose chins are sticking out too far are some of the goals of Neuromuscular Orthodontics. Special training and computerized jaw tracking education is required for dentists to be able to provide this special service.
