A Periodontist is a dentist who specializes in the diagnosis and surgical and non-surgical treatment of diseases and conditions of the periodontium. Periodontists are experts in the management of patients with periodontal diseases (diseases of the gums, jaw bone, cementum and the periodontal ligaments which compose the supporting structure of the teeth) including gingivitis, periodontitis and gingival recession (gum recession). Periodontists complete 3 years of additional formal training beyond dental school in an accredited residency training program. The educational requirements are as follows:

  • Certification as a periodontist after postdoctoral study in an ADA approved program. This period of study is concentrated on the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of periodontal disease.
  • Comprehensive written and oral examinations covering all phases of periodontal disease and its treatment, including dental implants.
  • Presentation of detailed reports on a broad range of actual treatment personally provided by the periodontist.
  • Recertification every three years.
